City guide

Fes in 2030

Morocco's spiritual and artisan capital, Fes is home to the largest car-free medina in the world.

Fes is Morocco's historic soul. Its medina, Fes el-Bali, a UNESCO site since 1981, is a living labyrinth of 9,000 alleys, souks and fondouks where time stands still.

For 2030, the city is preparing to host World Cup matches at the Fes Sports Complex and investing in hospitality and transport. Plan ahead — Fes is compact and hotel capacity is limited.

The medina and Chouara tanneries

Hire an official guide so you do not get lost and to understand the traditional trades: tanners, weavers, copper smiths. The Chouara tanneries, viewed from leather-shop terraces, are unmissable — bring a sprig of mint for the smell.

Spiritual and academic heritage

Al Quaraouiyine mosque-university, founded in 859, is regarded as the oldest continuously operating university in the world. The Bou Inania and Attarine madrasas show spectacular Marinid art: zellige, carved stucco and cedar.

World Cup 2030 in Fes

The Fes Sports Complex is being renovated for the 2030 World Cup. Fes is linked to Casablanca, Rabat and Tangier by the standard ONCF rail network. A high-speed extension to Fes is planned but should be confirmed with official sources.

Where to stay in Fes

Choose a riad inside the medina for the authentic experience, or a hotel in Fes el-Jdid / Ville Nouvelle for modern comfort. Capacity is limited — book early if you are coming for a 2030 match.

Practical checklist

  • Hire an official guide for the medina
  • Wear flat, comfortable shoes
  • Carry water and some cash
  • Avoid the medina alone after dark
  • Dress modestly at religious sites
  • Book your riad or hotel months in advance

Frequently asked questions

How many days for Fes?+

Two to three full days cover the medina, madrasas and artisans without rushing.

Do I need a guide for the medina?+

Strongly recommended. The medina is huge and an official guide helps you avoid getting lost.

How do I get to Fes from Casablanca?+

Direct ONCF train in about 3h30 to 4h. A high-speed link is planned for 2030 but not yet confirmed.

Is Fes family-friendly?+

Yes, but the medina is demanding (narrow alleys, slopes). A quieter Ville Nouvelle hotel suits young children.
