City guide

Rabat 2030

Morocco's capital: elegance, calm and heritage, 40 minutes from Casablanca.

Often overshadowed by Marrakech or Fès, Rabat nevertheless charms with its balance: a clean, orderly capital open to the Atlantic, with a human-sized medina and remarkable imperial heritage. It's also an excellent base for travellers looking for a quieter stay.

Its medina and the Chellah archaeological site are UNESCO World Heritage. The city has a station served by the Al Boraq high-speed train.

Why visit Rabat

Rabat offers a calmer Moroccan experience: less crowded, tree-lined avenues, seafront, and a successful blend of modern districts (Agdal, Hay Riad) and ancient heritage. Ideal for 2-3 days.

Best neighbourhoods to stay

Hassan / centre: close to the station and major sites.

Agdal: modern, restaurants, cafés, pleasant local life.

Medina: charming riads at often softer prices than Marrakech.

Souissi / Hay Riad: quiet and residential, good for families.

How to arrive

Rabat-Salé Airport (RBA) for a few European flights. Otherwise, land in Casablanca and take the train (40-60 min) or Al Boraq. Rabat-Ville station is central.

Getting around

Modern tram (2 lines) linking Rabat to Salé. Affordable blue petits taxis (ask for the meter). Walking covers most historic sites.

What to see

Kasbah of the Udayas and its Andalusian garden, Hassan Tower and Mausoleum of Mohammed V, Chellah (necropolis and Roman site), medina, Mohammed VI Museum of Modern Art, beach and corniche.

Food and restaurants

Good offer of traditional Moroccan restaurants, contemporary tables in Agdal, student cafés and international brasseries. Excellent fish thanks to the proximity of the ocean.

Practical tips

Rabat is considered one of Morocco's safest cities. Mild climate year-round but windy. Combine Rabat with Casablanca for a comfortable urban stop.

Practical checklist

  • Book early for 2030
