Money, Moroccan dirhams and travel budgeting for 2030

How to pay, when cash is useful and how to build a realistic World Cup trip budget.

Quick answer

The Moroccan dirham (MAD) is the local currency. International cards are widely accepted in hotels and many businesses, but cash is still useful for small payments. Build the budget around accommodation, transport and flexibility, not just the match ticket.

Paying day to day

Morocco's tourism office says ATMs are widespread and Visa or Mastercard are accepted by most hotels plus some restaurants, shops and petrol stations.

Cash remains useful in medinas, markets, small cafés and for some taxi trips. Avoid relying on a single payment method.

Changing money

Exchange offices are available at airports, banks, hotels and in tourist areas. The tourism office notes that a passport may be requested for a currency exchange transaction.

Compare the rate and any fees. Your own bank can also charge withdrawal or foreign-exchange fees.

Build a World Cup trip budget

For a major event, accommodation is likely to be the most volatile cost. Nights around high-demand dates can move sharply. Add inter-city travel, stadium transfers, food and insurance.

Do not build the plan around assumed 2030 ticket prices before FIFA publishes them. Keep a separate ticketing reserve instead.

Keep a flexibility reserve

A small contingency fund lets you change city, take a taxi instead of a bus or add an extra night if the itinerary shifts. That flexibility has real value during event travel.
