Nécropole de Chellah
Roman and Marinid archaeological site set in a birdlife garden.
About
Chellah, just outside the Rabat walls, layers a Roman site (former Sala Colonia) and a medieval Marinid necropolis, all wrapped in a wooded garden where storks nest in summer. Free self-guided visit: Roman forum and baths below, minaret, medersa and Marinid mausoleums higher up. Since 2024-25 much of the site has been restored. One of the calmest spots in Rabat.
Why it is listed
- ◆Rare Roman + Islamic layering in Morocco.
- ◆Garden site, shaded — nice even in full heat.

Traveller tips
- ◆Allow 1h30 to see it all calmly.
- ◆Combine with Hassan Tower, 15 min by taxi.
- ◆Little shade around the Roman ruins — bring a hat.
