Souk des tapis — Médina de Rabat
Rue Souika and Rue des Consuls — the medina's craft and carpet heart.
About
Unlike Marrakech's staged souks, Rabat's medina retains a genuine local commercial function. Rue Souika and Rue des Consuls concentrate the carpet sellers (Rabati, Middle Atlas, southern kilims), embroiderers, spice merchants. Prices aren't posted, but bargaining is less aggressive than in other medinas. We list the category rather than a single seller: the medina is a whole.
Why it is listed
- ◆Medina still used by Rabatis, not tourists only.
- ◆Solid reputation for carpets (Rabat has a historic weaving school).
- ◆More civilised bargaining than elsewhere.
Traveller tips
- ◆Go in the morning (10am-12pm), it's calmer.
- ◆Always ask origin and material of a carpet.
- ◆Compare 2-3 shops before buying — prices vary.
